While Bohr hypothesised, Henry Moseley was busy with X-rays, proving atomic number—not weight—defined an element’s spot. Together, their insights pinned the 14 lanthanides between lanthanum and hafnium, plus scandium and yttrium, producing the 17 rare earths recognised today.

Why It Matters Today
Bohr and Moseley’s breakthrough opened the use of rare earths in lasers, magnets, and clean energy. Had we missed that foundation, defence systems would be a generation behind.

Yet, Bohr’s name seldom appears when rare earths make headlines. His quantum fame eclipses this quieter triumph—a key that turned scientific chaos into a roadmap for modern industry.
